What is Tomiki Aikido?
Tomiki Aikido is a modern, structured form of Aikido developed specifically for broader participation. It emphasizes balance, timing, and leverage rather than strength or aggression. Anyone can practice it. It is one of the most accessible martial arts in the world, and the only form of Aikido that incorporates a competitive, sport-based component alongside traditional practice.

Royal Palm Aikido is affiliated with the Tomiki Aikido Association (TAA), the first and largest Tomiki Aikido organization in the United States, established in 1990. Every session Jonathan leads is grounded in that lineage and tradition.

Tomiki Aikido developed from Morihei Ueshiba’s Aikido, a Japanese martial art founded around 1925 that emphasizes evading attacks, using an opponent’s strength and momentum, and controlling them without unnecessary harm through joint techniques, throws, and strikes. Ueshiba’s art was influenced by traditional Japanese martial arts, spiritual disciplines, and principles of physical, moral, spiritual, and mental development. Kenji Tomiki, a highly accomplished judoka and student of Ueshiba, later combined Aikido with his knowledge of Judo and physical education. After teaching in Manchuria and returning to Japan, he developed kata-based training and freestyle competition methods at Waseda University, despite disagreements with Ueshiba and the Aikikai over introducing competition. Tomiki established the Shodokan Dojo in 1967, helped organize Japan’s first student Aikido tournaments, and founded the Japan Aikido Association in 1974, creating a distinct form of Aikido centered on structured training, practical application, and competitive practice.
Adults 55+: Balance, Confidence, and Gentle Movement
The 55+ session is purpose-built for older adults who want to stay active, move better, and feel steadier on their feet. Tomiki Aikido's emphasis on controlled movement, body awareness, and balance translates directly into everyday life. Participants finish feeling capable and more confident in their own body.
No prior martial arts experience. No high-impact movements. Just practical, engaging activity that leaves people wanting to come back.
Why Your Residents Will Love It
Women 30+: Self-Defense, Confidence, and Stress Relief
The women's session teaches real, usable self-defense skills built on balance, timing, and leverage rather than strength. The training environment is cooperative, not competitive. Progress is gradual and supportive.
Participants leave with practical skills, reduced stress, and a stronger sense of their own capability. It is the kind of class women recommend to their friends.
Veterans: Discipline, Focus, and Structured Fitness
Tomiki Aikido's structured, disciplined approach resonates strongly with veterans. The practice demands focus, rewards precision, and builds physical fitness alongside mental clarity. Jonathan's training draws on multiple martial arts disciplines, and he brings that depth to every veterans' session.
Beginners: A Welcoming First Step into Martial Arts
For residents who have always been curious about martial arts but never taken the step, beginner sessions offer a clear, well-paced introduction. The curriculum moves from foundational footwork and stances through core Tomiki techniques, with every session building directly on the last.
How Hosting Works
Hosting a Royal Palm Aikido event is designed to be as easy as possible for you.
1. Reach out.
Contact Jonathan to talk through what your community is looking for: resident demographics, available space, and preferred timing.
2. Choose your session.
Sessions run 90 minutes. Jonathan works with you to select the program that fits your residents best, whether that is a single introductory event or a recurring series.
3. Prepare the space.
You need a clear, flat area large enough for participants to move comfortably. A community room, recreation center, multipurpose space, or outdoor area all work well. No special equipment is required.
4. Jonathan takes it from there.
He arrives with everything needed, runs the full session, and manages all instruction. Your role on the day is simply to welcome your residents.
Already running in your area. Royal Palm Aikido's partnership with the Bonita Springs YMCA is a live example of exactly this model. Monday Night Classes run every Monday from 7pm to 9pm (ages 21+). If you want to see what a community partnership with Royal Palm Aikido looks like in practice, that program is already under way.
Group pricing is flexible. Contact Jonathan to discuss the right format and pricing for your specific community.
