The Introduction to Aikido
What New Students Can Expect in Their First Three Lessons of Tomiki Aikido Welcome to your journey in Tomiki Aikido! In your first three lessons, you'll be introduced to key principles, techniques, and safety fundamentals in a gentle, supportive environment. Lesson 1 (separate class): Foundations You'll begin with a warm welcome, light stretching, and an introduction to Aikido’s philosophy. You'll learn essential footwork and stances, followed by your first technique: Ikkyo. Emphasis is placed on smooth movement and blending with your partner. Lesson 2 (separate class): Building Skills This session reinforces what you’ve learned and adds new techniques like Nikyo and Sankyo. You'll also begin Ukemi — learning how to fall safely. This includes backward rolls and side falls, practiced slowly to ensure comfort and safety. Lesson 3 (separate class): Refinement & Confidence You'll continue improving technique and Ukemi with guidance from your instructor. Techniques like Yonkyo and Gokyo may be introduced, along with further falling practice. Listening, observing, and moving mindfully are key themes. Conclusion: These first three lessons lay a strong foundation in Aikido. You’ll learn not only technique, but awareness, control, and confidence — all at a pace designed for adults aged 30+. Aikido is about personal growth as much as self-defense. Embrace the learning process and enjoy the journey ahead!
